چکیده

A new class of resonant exchange of power among three co-propagating modes in dielectric optical waveguides exhibiting Kerr-like nonlinearity is reported. Unlike the coupling of modes travelling in different, spatially separated channels as in the directional coupler (Jensen, IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-18 ( 1982) 1580; Chen, Snyder and Mitchell, Electron. Lett. 26 ( 1990) 77; Schmidt-Hattenberger, Trutschel and Lederer, Optics L&t. 16 (1991) 294) this paper points out the possibility of obtaining an efficient coupling of modes travelling in one single channel. The key point here is the imposition of a geometrical resonance between modes, to improve the coupling process. Due to this resonance condition, which is related with the wavelength through the propagation constants, the power exchange process is very sensitive to the wavelength.

Two-color discrete localized modes and resonant scattering in arrays of nonlinear quadratic optical waveguides.

We analyze the properties and stability of two-color discrete localized modes in arrays of channel waveguides where tunable quadratic nonlinearity is introduced as a nonlinear defect by periodic poling of a single waveguide in the array. We show that, depending on the value of the phase mismatch and the input power, such two-color defect modes can be realized in three different localized states...

Add-Drop and Channel-Drop Optical Filters Based on Photonic Crystal Ring Resonators

Here, we propose an add-drop and a channel drop filter based on two-dimensional photonic crystal all circular ring resonators. These structures are made of a square lattice of silicon rods with the refractive index n1=3.464 surrounded by air (with refractive index n2=1). The broadest photonic band gap occurs at the filling ratio of r/a = 0.17. Two linear defect W1 waveguides couple to the ring....

Phase-matching and Nonlinear Optical Processes in Silicon Waveguides.

The efficiency of four-wave-mixing arising from Raman and non-resonant nonlinear susceptibilities in silicon waveguides is studied in the 1.3 - 1.8microm regime. The wavelength conversion efficiency is dominated by the Raman contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, and high conversion efficiencies can be achieved under the phase-matching condition. In this context, dispersion in silicon wa...

Resonant mode conversion in the waveguides with an unbroken and broken -symmetry

We study resonant mode conversion in the  -symmetric multimode waveguides, where symmetry breaking manifests itself in sequential destabilization (appearance of the complex eigenvalues) of the pairs of adjacent guided modes. We show that the efficient mode conversion is possible even in the presence of the resonant longitudinal modulation of the complex refractive index. The distinguishing fe...
